   On the Resort...

We are also proud to announce that we had our annual visit from the South African Grading Council and have retained our 5-Star grading at the Country House with a score of 96%!

Set against the gentle backdrop of grassy Bushveld savannahs, the 5-Star, Butler-serviced Sondela Country House is embraced by majestic trees and rolling green lawns and enjoys delightful glimpses of fertile farm fields and vineyards.

The recent addition of the stately Country House is the proverbial diamond in the crown for Sondela Nature Reserve and its already versatile range of top class accommodation, leisure and conference facilities.

The Caravan Park, Moselesele Tented Camp and the Chalets have once again been awarded their 4 Stars. CONGRATULATIONS to all!!

MAKHATO

Mid-winter is well and truly here! Icy frosts greet us most mornings and the nights are getting extremely cold - thankfully most days reach a reasonably civil temperature and guests can still enjoy the sunshine around the Piccinini's pool area. Those of you who have ventured out on game drives may have noticed that even the animals are taking shelter from the cold and spend most of their days hiding amongst the denser areas of bushveld.  As was explained in the previous newsletter, Eskom has raised the electricity tarrifs and will now also take into account the amount of electricity consumed per household in order to force people to cut down on wastage. For this reason, all geysers will be turned down to 60C in order to lower consumption rates.

With the advent of winter, comes the danger of veld fires and you will see that larger areas are being cleared around the Makhato houses and grass verges are being cut short for protection from fire.

On an admin note, please remember that all accounts must be paid in full before the 10th of each month. If you have any queries on your account, please contact the admin ladies who will be happy to assist.

Word of the Friday night Carnivore Feast at Piccinini's Bistro is spreading fast. A blazing pit fire, an amazing selection of meats carefully prepared by Chef and finished in front of you as you wait, assorted side dishes and pudding, and all at an unbeatable price, make this a wonderful experience and a real bargain dinner for the whole family. So next time you come to Sondela, don't bring food for Friday night - just pick up the phone and secure your table in advance and indulge in this all-you-can-eat special!

Finally, the well-known estate agency Seef Properties now has an office at the Farmyard on Sondela. You are welcome to contact them for any assistance you may require with the selling and re-selling of your Makhato stand or Lodge: Loua Boshoff - Tel: 014 736 6497, Fax: 086 679 8173, Email: loua@seef.com

ABET (Adult Basic Education and Training)

This comes from a letter received by one of our workforces' dedicated ABET facilitators. It reads as follows:

One afternoon she presented the ABET class and three learners were present that particular day; Andries, Thomas and Anna. While she was busy explaining the work individually to the learners, she came to the realization that although Thomas could understand the work, he found it immensely difficult to do the work in his workbook.

After she tried to help him in his workbook, Thomas said that the words seemed to be distorted to him. Thomas explained that he couldn't distinguish the difference in letters because the letters are too small.

She re-wrote his book but in much bigger letters so that he could see them better. After that he had no problems with his workbook.  That afternoon she decided to buy Thomas reading glasses to help him in the class.

She gave him the glasses the following day and Thomas was overcome with joy as the glasses were just right and he could see the normal lettering in his workbook. She further commented that Thomas is one of many dedicated ABET students and is always ready with questions. He always wants to learn. She says that he is a good humble person and she was just glad that she could help him.  She knows that he will use the opportunity and excel even further. Thomas told her that he looks after the reading glasses very well and only wears them at the ABET school.

Erika (the Media Works representative who monitors Sondela's ABET programme), states that Sondela Academy has the most active ABET programme in the area.

 Wildlife Centre
   Meet Mathilda...

One of the latest additions to the Wildlife Centre, a baby female giraffe, has decided that sucking her milk is too much work and it's much easier for her to simply stand there and have the milk gently squirted into her mouth, as all she has to do is swallow! She wants her bottle but only if it comes from someone tall enough to hold it above her head and so no one short can feed her. If you are not tall enough to get the bottle above her head, she throws a fit and showers you with milky drool before sauntering away and refusing to drink any more. Quite a problem as not many people are the height of a young giraffe!

An old employee of the Wildlife Centre brought in a juvenile Serval with apparent brain trauma. We suspected that he either suffered an injury to the head as a kitten or had contracted meningitis. After medical treatment to rule out meningitis, we started to put 'Lefty' in with Savannah's 3 month old kittens. He loves the company and with improved nutrition his balance, energy and awareness have improved dramatically. We just didn't realise how much!

One morning, one of the students from Sondela Academy who works at the Wildlife Centre, was taking Lefty from his night-time sleeping spot in the heated indoor clinic, to his day-time spot outside with the kittens. The little rascal, who could barely run in a straight line when he arrived here, saw an opportunity and before you could blink shot away at a flat-out sprint towards the other kittens at the other side of the WLC! All you saw was a streak of gold, lead flying out behind him and a guy running his heart out after the escapee. It was hilarious to watch and gave us all a good laugh for the day. The best part though was seeing just how great an improvement the funny little cat has made.

The skinny little female wildebeest, Luella, who came in about a month ago, pulled through despite the odds. She is finally putting on weight and has two 'body guards' looking out for her on a permanent basis. Jacob and Emmett are growing into two very sturdy, very boisterous young bulls. Feeding time has turned into a game of avoiding being rammed or horned in their desperate search for the prized bottle! Needless to say, we often get lifted right off our feet, or walk away with a few bruises!

There's certainly never a dull moment at the Wildlife Centre!
